Troubleshooting Solr setup on WAS 8.x

We recently came across an interesting issue with one of our clients. Our client was trying to setup Solr 4.7.2 on WAS 8.x and was unsuccessful in starting up the Solr application. When they contacted us with the issue, the first thing we looked at was the AppServer logs. Here’s a snippet from the AppServer logs: [6/20/14 16:19:04:959 CDT] 00000082 CompositionUn A WSVR0191I:...

Delivering Your Enterprise: Usability

This article is part of an ongoing series. See the blog entry Delivering Your Enterprise: The ilities for an overall discussion. I have to admit, I've been putting off discussing Usability because, well, I wanted the information to be usable. Like user interface design, it's one of those topics where everyone considers themselves an expert. While we all have more to learn about...

GSA (Google Search Appliance) database connector not pushing feeds to the GSA?

After configuring Google search appliance connectors, sometimes Google search appliance doesn't receive any feeds from the connector. This issue could be a little unclear to troubleshoot. The reason being everything looks okay and the connector status shows green in the GSA admin console. No matter how many times you try to reset the connector, the GSA doesn't receive feeds from the...

Delivering Your Enterprise: Adaptability and Maintainability

This article is part of an ongoing series. See the blog entry Delivering Your Enterprise: The ilities for an overall discussion. We've all been on projects where management stood up and announced some variation of "The project is running late - we don't have time to do any more design, so just start coding." The junior members of the team get excited ("About time - coding!"),...

Display time taken to render a portlet in Liferay

Improving application performance and optimizing application performance is key to enhancing user experience with websites. Monitoring individual portlet load times and optimizing individual portlets can contribute to better user experience and better overall performance of an application. Liferay provides an easy way of displaying individual portlet load times in a page. Adding the...

Liferay Portlet Sandboxing

You may not be aware yet, but there's a new liferay feature called Portlet Sandboxing.  You can find the "Portlet Sandbox EE" plugin in the Liferay Marketplace.  This feature was designed to isolate portlets applications from liferay and other portlets.  The theory is that a poorly written portlet should not take down the entire site.   This is done by running...

Removing Orphaned Oracle Datapump Jobs

So for various reasons I run into orphaned datapump jobs either due to a session failure during the import or for some other unknown reason for a failed import. What I wanted to show you really quick was how to find them and how to remove them so you can run your datapump job without changing the name of the job in your script or on the command line. First you need to find the orphaned...

Delivering Your Enterprise: Security

This article is part of an ongoing series. See the blog entry Delivering Your Enterprise: The ilities for an overall discussion. Ah, Security. It's one of those things most of us don't think about until there's a catastrophic failure. It's a fundamental part of our enterprise high wire act. And when the wire on your trapeze breaks, it doesn't do much good to check if there's a...

IBM UDB DB2 Database restore and SQL1035N

SQL1035N  The database is currently in use.  SQLSTATE=57019 IBM UDB DB2 V9.7/10.1/10.5 on Windows/UNIX/Linux I have been trying to create a script that will refresh the test database using QA data on a regular schedule. Liferay integration with Solr cloud - Part 2

As a follow up to my last blog post on Integration Liferay with Solr Cloud , I felt that this post will help enhance Liferay's integration with Solr cloud further by reducing the number of indexing requests that are fired off to Solr instances thus reducing the load on Solr servers. Liferay provides a Solr-web plugin that can be configured to send search and indexing requests to...
